About COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS:
Western society prides itself on individuality and shrinks from words like socialism and communism, apparently forgetting all the ways our way of life depends on cooperation—and not only between humans. We rely on pollinators in our agricultural systems, we rely on coral reefs to help protect coastal areas from storms, and we rely on mushrooms to decompose dead plant matter. In the case of mushrooms, the parts we see aboveground are only a small part of the organism, and the ways they affect us are only a small part of how they work within the broader ecosystem. They even help facilitate communication and nutrient exchange between trees! None of these creature communities—or the systems they’re part of—would be able to exist alone. In fact, it would be hard to pick out the contributions of just one coral polyp or one bird in a flock or one human tissue cell. The whole is far greater than the sum of its parts.

Unfortunately… bees, coral reefs, and many species of migrating birds are on the decline because of anthropogenic climate change.

The short version: I was inspired to create this piece by Andy Weir's short story "The Egg," which is about death, reincarnation, and the interconnectedness of humankind. We’re all made of the same stuff: atoms and cells and star farts. :)

A more detailed explanation of the imagery in this piece can be found on my blog.
