About CONVERSATIONS WITH THE DEAD:
I was inspired by an episode of This American Life to make a piece about the Japanese "wind phone," (kaze no denwa) which is a disconnected phone booth where people go to speak to their dearly departed, especially those who died in the 2011 tsunami. Here, the paper lanterns (chōchin) represent the souls of family members. In Japanese culture, paper lanterns are not normally associated with death but with festivals. However, I chose them because of their festive associations, because to me that is a great representation for "life force" and happy memories. The writing on the lanterns says mother, aunt, little brother, older sister, etc.
