About HATCHING:
This piece is in conversation with the short story "The Egg" by Andy Weir, which is about reincarnation and the idea that hurting another person is equal to hurting one's self. I took the "we are one" metaphor further by exploring the lines between humans and other forms of life. For example, chicken embryos and human embryos look nearly the same up to a certain stage of development. E Coli are separate from us, yet live in our bodies and our necessary for a healthy digestive system. So are they really separate from us? We're linked to both species--and all life on Earth--by the evolutionary history recorded in DNA. The drawing also contains images of Turritopsis dohrnii, the "immortal jellyfish," which doesn't reincarnate per se but can age backwards and forwards in response to stress.
